This morning I had the fantastic opportunity to talk about 4-H and the Miss America Scholarship program on TV-21 WFMJ's Morning Show! We talked about my job as Miss Mansfield as well as what 4-H has to offer to kids everywhere. The crew was so excited and extremely interested in the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program. 4-H talk at Howland Local Schools

Mrs. Xides' third grade class and myself. They were such great listeners!!

On Thursday afternoon I had the awesome opportunity to speak with Mrs. Xides' third grade class about 4-H. I was hoping the class would be responsive about 4-H and what it has to offer, and guess what? They were! They loved hearing about my job as Miss Mansfield and my years in 4-H. I told the class about how I got involved with the 4-H program when I was in third grade, just like them. We talked about all the different kinds of clubs available and the kids asked about a half hour's worth of questions! I was so happy to see the kids interested in 4-H. Many of them were asking about how to get in contact with 4-H advisers so they can join the program. I was also very happy with the talk because only one kid in the class had ever heard of 4-H. Now the whole class knows about the program and how fun it really is and hopefully many of them will join 4-H and spread the word about their positive experiences!!

Community Service Day in Mansfield

The Mansfield Ladies!

This past weekend, all of the Miss Ohio contestants headed down to Mansfield to donate their time and give back to the community. All of the contestants were split up and divided into different groups that visited different areas. I, along with Katie Bowen (Miss West Central), Shannon O'Neill (Miss Lima Square Fair) and Heidi Negron (Miss Muskingum Valley), visited the Waterford which is an assisted living facility. The day started off with us contestants serving coffee and juice to the residents as well as chatting and getting to know them. After that we were served a very tasty lunch by the darling staff of Waterford. Finally, our day ended with each contestant performing for the residents. The audience, which was full of not only residents but family and friends as well, ooohed and aahhhed as each of us performed. And as the "pes de resistance" of the afternoon, Erica Gelhaus (Miss Ohio herself) stopped by briefly to say hello and perform "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady. I signed autographs for the residents afterward, many of them even asked if we would come back and I told them that I'd love to! Hopefully I'll be back to Waterford sometime soon to see all of my friends! And all of the Miss Ohio contestants will be visiting during Miss Ohio week because they will be serving us lunch one day during the week. I can't wait!!

After our day of service, we headed over to Park Lanes for the Bowl-a-Thon. Amber, Chelsi and I had a Disney princess theme. The amazing Chelsi Howman had t-shirts made with Belle, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty on them each representing one of us. Thank you Chelsi!!! Unfortunately, my bowling score was....well, bad. But I had a great time nonetheless!! I look forward to seeing everyone again, which won't be until Miss Ohio week!!

A Long List of Mansfield Appearances

As I mentioned before, my computer crashed a few months ago and because of that I've been unable to share my Miss Mansfield adventures!

The day before Easter I had a blast at the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Ontario. Amber (Miss North Central Ohio), Chelsi (Mansfield's Outstanding Teen) as well as Courtney (Miss Ontario) were there to help me celebrate the day. Oh, and did I mention the Easter Bunny himself was there?! Yes, the five of us helped as kids of all ages scouted out the best and biggest Easter eggs. I can't wait until next year!

I recently made a trip to Henri's Cloud Nine to purchase my evening gown for Miss Ohio. I had a blast trying on practically every dress in the store, but thanks to my incredibly handsome and funny pageant dress gurus, I was able to decide on "the one." Unfortunately for blog-world I am keeping my dress a secret until I hit the runway on the Miss Ohio stage. But don't worry, you'll see it soon enough!
After a day of dress shopping, I headed to Ontario to perform at the Miss Ontario pageant. This pageant is a traditional title for high schoolers at Ontario High School. I performed my new talent as well as helped crowned the winner. Everyone had a blast!!

On May 8th I participated in the 5k Heart Walk a.k.a. "Red Dress Run." The Mansfield gang started participating in this event during the year of Emily Cousino's reign as Miss Mansfield. Many of you may remember Emily, her platform was heart disease and she was a girl that actually lived her platform day to day. And because of Emily, we keep the tradition alive and ever year Miss Mansfield runs the 5K. I had a great time!

This past Friday the Mansfield gang was back in action for the Miss Mansfield send off party. The event took place at the beautiful Westbrook Country Club in Mansfield. Amber, Chelsi and I performed as well as modeled our evening gowns. Laura also gave us all amazing gifts! Thank you so much to to everyone for an amazing event, you made all of us titleholders feel like Miss America! Thank you to Amber for her adorable gift as well as Chelsi, you two are the best sister queens a girl could ask for. And last but not least, thank you to Amber Cleland for the delicious Miss Ohio Barbie Cakes!!!

Last night I had the honor of crowning six new titlholders along with my friends Kristy Moneysmith and Ashley Warholic! My reign had ended as Miss Ohio River and the adorable Rebekah Zoz is now representing the title. It was a long day for everyone, but well worth it. The two pageants were back to back with an hour break in between. The shows moved along quickly and the girls' talents and bubbly personalities kept the shows interesting. Miss Ohio Erica Gelhaus and Miss Ohio's Outstanding Teen Veronica Wende were the emcees for the evening and entertained the audience with performances and several funny stories about their year so far being Miss Ohio.

Unfortunately, I was so busy this past week I was unable to blog about my most recent Mansfield appearance. Amber and I attended the Big Brothers/Big Sisters bowling fundraiser. We had a great time bowling and had the chance to interact with the supportive people of Mansfield. Our group bowled two games: one serious and one with crazy bowling techniques! Our team consisted of bowlers that were, for a lack of a better word, inexperienced. But Jeff was amazing! He practically bowled a perfect game! I'm hoping that I've found a new team member for the bowl-a-thon coming up ;)

The L.E.A.D. Revolution!

As I work with my platform and prepare for my school "tour" (where I will visit several elementary and intermediate schools promoting 4-H), I've been thinking of the most effective way to get kids involved. Everyone knows 4-H is "kind of a big deal" in the rural areas. Well, most individuals don't understand that 4-H is for anyone and EVERYONE! I was involved with 4-H for 10 years growing up as a kid until I aged out at 19. I live in an average suburban area, and very few people from my area were involved in 4-H and even fewer kids from the city. My goal is L.E.A.D. through 4-H. I want kids from everywhere: all backgrounds and different areas, no matter where they come from, to know that, they too, can start a revolution.

In this day and age of instant gratification many parents are concerned with the way their children, adolescents, teens and young adults will grow up. Well I say "More power to us!" Let's 'instantly' make a difference. Let's start this now! 4-H is ALL about you! You get to lead your own meeting, make your own decisions and vote as an entire club. How many other activities let kids run the show?

OK, so you're probably wondering what L.E.A.D. is about, right?
Link Ohio- Let's get 4-Hers all throughout Ohio working together and once Ohio is unified, we're going to move on to the rest of the United States! And I can't wait to start in Trumbull and Richland County.
Exposure- We want 4-H to get out there to those that may not understand what it has to offer. Kids in suburbs and cities: you are all in for a treat! Once you get involved with 4-H, you'll be with us for life!
Accelerate- 4-H is a program that is going to accelerate your life. You want to be a scientist? Great! There's even a 4-H club for future scientists and they even work with DNA?! Being in 4-H will give you skills that no other club or school activity will be able to supply you with.
Determination- Determination is a key factor in anything you do. Until I got involved with 4-H, at the age of 9, I had never felt more motivation to want to succeed and work hard. I eventually even met my personal goals of being the grand champion, President of Silver Claws and President of Junior Fair Board. All through and because of 4-H.

Let's L.E.A.D. through 4-H and start a revolution of kids that are leaders!!! The 4-H pledge is: I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service and my health to better living for my club, my community, my country, and my world.... And I believe that this revolution is going to do exactly what the creed says. Were going to make things better, by being leaders, for our club, community, country and world. Phew, I don't know about you but I am so pumped right now!

Rehab Telethon

Miss Mansfield made her first appearance at the Rehab Telethon this past Saturday. Amber, Chelsi and I performed at the Richland Mall for the Rehab Telethon, which aired live on WFMD. I preformed a salsa-esq dance to "Right Now" and Amber sang the LeAnn Rimes song, "But I do Love You." I also had the pleasure of, once again, watching the fabulous G-Force perform, as they also helped raise funds for the cause.

The 19th annual telethon raised nearly $53,000 for Portage county's largest Rehab Center. I had a wonderful time this past weekend and I can't wait to return to Mansfield for more fun opportunities! Thank you everyone.

Sweetheart Dance

I had the pleasure of attending DR Services' Sweetheart Dance, in Ashland, this past Wednesday. There were pictures, candy and of course TONS of dancing. My friend Chelsi Howman, Miss Mansfield's Outstanding Teen, was there with me to celebrate the event! Unfortunately, Amber was unable to attend because of an evening class on Wednesday, but I know she would have had a blast.
The dance took place at the beautiful Ashland Country Club, and was for adults with special needs. Chelsi and I handed out door prizes and led dances such as the YMCA and the electric slide. Melanie Murphy Miller was also there, and is practically a celebrity! Every one's face lit up when THE 'Miss Ohio' Melanie walked in! Melanie was also the conductor of a large "train" for the locomotion.

The Sweetheart dance was a success and I had a fabulous time dancing the night away. Thank you to DR Services and Melanie for inviting me to the event as well as all of the volunteers from Ashland High School's NHS and Ashland University.

I had a wonderful time tonight wrapping gifts at Border's Books to raise awareness and funds for 4-H. Tommy (a fellow 4-Her) and I worked together. We had a great time talking about 4-H and recruiting new 4-hers. I would post more but I have to wake up pretty early tomorrow!

As we all know, yesterday was the big "Turkey Day." Families gathered, bellies were filled and every man in America probably watched football for the rest of the day. I had a great Thanksgiving Day! I woke up early to run the 31st annual Turkey Trot. The Turkey Trot is either a 2 or 5 mile race and the proceeds go to the Warren Kiwanas Club. Many of you, including myself, may not know what a Kiwana's club purpose is, so I looked it up.

"The Warren Kiwanis club exists for the purpose of positively impacting the community of Warren, and the image of that community. We choose to achieve this goal primarily by enhancing the quality of life for the youth of this community, as well as the membership of this organization. Our success will, in large part, be based on the visibility of our activities, programs, leadership, and pride in the Warren Kiwanis."

After the race, I headed back home to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and I saw Katie Stam, our Miss America! I was so happy to see her back in the parade. She looked so beautiful. And I must say that I loved her outfit, it looked wonderful.

And since it's officially the Holiday Season, now that Thanksgiving is out of the way. I thought I would post some festive and gorgeous pictures of our Miss Ohio, Erica Gelhaus! It won't be long until she leaves for Miss America. I know she's going to make us very proud. The pictures were taken be Christine Walsh-Newton and I think she did a wonderful job, Erica looks amazing!

A Pageant Update

Last night was the Buckeyes and Beauties Bowling for Books event and Miss West Central/Miss Lima Square Fair. I attended the bowling event so I wasn't able to be at the pageant but I must congratulate my friends Katie Bowen and Shannon O'Neill on capturing the two titles last night. I'm sure pictures will start floating around Facebook soon, so I will post some ASAP.

The bowling event was a huge success and I was so happy to be apart of it. I had a great time bowling with friends and meeting the Buckeye football team....man they are tall! Most of my family members live in Columbus and they were able to make it to the event. They had a wonderful time meeting Miss Ohio and (attempting) to bowl. Erica and Martha put on a fantastic event and I hope it can turn into an annual event.

I also want to congratulate Sarah Hider on winning the title of Miss North Coast last weekend. I had a great time at the pageant and it was nice having a short program because the pageant was over pretty early. I was also excited to see Nanci and Amber because they were wonderful chaperones at Miss Ohio and I really enjoy kidding around backstage with them.

The Miss Teen USA pageant will be webcast tonight from the Bahamas at 8 pm. Miss Ohio Teen USA, Kelsey Stevens competed in preliminaries last night. I know Kelsey from Miss Ohio Teen USA in 2007 when I was first runner-up and she was second runner-up to Chelsea Folden. I also happen to know her Aunt from fashion shows and attending the same church. I wish Kelsey the best of luck and I would love to see Ohio win their second Teen USA title!!

Since Miss Ohio I've made appearances at Howland's Fourth of July parade, the Trumbull County Fair and I crowned the new Miss Trumbull County Fair and Junior Fair Queen. I've been enjoying my summer so far but I look forward to another school year, another pageant season and although it won't happen for six months, another new Miss America (hopefully Erica!). I will keep you updated as much as possible as I continue to work with my platform "Groomed 4 Success." I hope to obtain a position on the state 4-H council and even the nation council. Miss Ohio Week 2009

First off, I must congratulate Erica Gelhaus on winning the title of Miss Ohio 2009!! She is a wonderful young woman who is beautiful not only on the outside but on the inside as well. She is extremely talented and very well-spoken. I can honestly say that Miss Ohio may have another Miss America on their hands! I wish her the best of luck during her year as Miss Ohio and I know she will do great at Miss America 2010.

For those of you that are familiar with Miss Ohio week you know that it is hectic and tiring. Although everyone was dragging by the Saturday morning, we had more down time than other years! All of the contestants caught on to the production number very quickly and we often found ourselves back at our host homes while the sun was still up. I had a great time getting to know all of the new contestants and reuniting with the old. I enjoyed all of the activities during the week, such as the Carousel, the fashion show at the Richland Mall, the parade especially the Clydesdale horses, the teen pageant and of course the crowning moment of the new Miss Ohio.

I was thrilled to be a top 10 semi-finalist at Miss Ohio this year. I really had a wonderful time and I wasn't the least bit disappointed with the top 5 results. I was just happy for the opportunity to perform on Saturday night. I am really looking forward to next year and I already miss all of the chaperons and contestants.

I really feel like I've grown as a person and competitor since I began competing in the program. I learned that the most important thing to have when competing at Miss Ohio (or anything in life) is a positive attitude. It's definitely easier said than done. It's so easy to compare yourself to other contestants and began to convince yourself that you're not worthy or winning and that you're not good enough, etc. Karissa gave all of the contestants the best advice I've ever heard. She said that we are only competing with ourselves and not one another and it is important that we don't become our own worst enemy.

I have to thank so many people! First I must thank God for the wonderful opportunity to compete at Miss Ohio and for giving me strength not to pass out under the HOT stage lights (haha). I also have to thank my mom and grandma for coming to every competition night and always sitting through my events (no matter how boring). I definitely have to thank Amber Cleland for being the best chaperon and host home EVER! We had the best time together and I really do miss her already! Another thank you goes out to Sue Cleland. Although she wasn't technically my chaperon this year, I felt like she still was. Thank you for fixing my dresses at the last moment and I really enjoyed our lunch date on the boat! I have to thank Brett, my boyfriend, for driving to Mansfield to drive me in the parade. It really meant a lot to me and I was happy he got to enjoy and be a part of Miss Ohio week. I want to thank Melanie Murphy Miller for her constructive advice during my talent rehearsal, it definitely helped. I also have to thank Dolly, Wil and Charlie for the great dinner before the teen pageant. They are all so supportive and encouraging and I love my Miss Maple City family. Thanks to Karissa for a wonderful year as Miss Ohio 2008, you were fantastic and I know you will be very successful in anything you want to do. And last but not least, thank you to all of the other contestants for an amazing week and wonderful memories.

I'm back from Disney and ready for Miss Ohio!

As I take a vacation from my vacation, I can't help but to get excited for Miss Ohio! First, I'll tell you about my trip to Walt Disney World. I had a blast and we got to ride all the rides and see all the attractions we really wanted to see. I mentioned previously that my last trip to Disney was in '05. Some things have changed since the last time I'd been there. I noticed the parades and shows incorporate more dancing and actual performing! I think this is the influence of the High School Musical movies and Hannah Montana, but it's definitely a good thing. I also rode the newer rides, such as Soarin' and Toy Story Mania, which were both great. Of course, there was Fantasmic! and Spectromagic which were enjoyable as always. But I must say that one of my favorite parts of the trip was the dinner show "Hoopdie Doo" and meeting Mickey Mouse. For those of you that have never been to Disney, disregard what I just said because you won't understand any of it (lol).

Although I had a fun week, it's now time to get ready and start packing for Miss Ohio and I couldn't be more excited. I have finalized the choreography to the dance I'm doing, which is a lyrical number to the song Via Dolorosa by Sandi Patti. I will be adding the final touches and rhinestones to my talent costume soon along with the tedious task of PACKING! Wish me luck as I prepare for Miss Ohio. I look forward to seeing all of my Miss Ohio sisters, it won't be long.

Miss Ohio is drawing near, so what am I doing to prepare? I'm going to Disney World! OK, well I guess no REAL preparation will be taking place but it's a nice break from practicing, working on my platform, working out, reviewing different topics for interview, etc. I am excited that once I get back form Disney World I will have only a week or so before Miss Ohio! Hopefully I will be able to update you with some pictures from trip since I will be meeting every one's favorite mouse, Mickey!

The last time I'd been to Disney was 2005 (when I was 15) for Christmas. Since then, I became busy with school and activities and we haven't had a chance to go until now. Here are some picture from my trip to Disneyland in '05.

Miss Ohio Community Service Day

Yesterday was the Miss Ohio Community Service Day/Bowl-A-Thon! The contestants arrived around 10 am and broke up into smaller groups. The different groups went to various places around the Mansfield area for their community service projects. I was in a group with Miss West Central, Victoria Miller and Miss Heart of Ohio, Ashley Warholic. We went to the Salvation Army in Ashland, Ohio to visit the Kroc building (donated by Joan Kroc, founder of McDonald's who donated $1.5 billion to the Salvation Army before she passed away). The three of us along with Melanie Murphy Miller, Miss Ohio 2006 hosted a Princess Party! Little girls and their mothers (even some grandmothers) attended the party. We started off by decorating crowns and coloring. Then the contestants served everyone lunch and had our very own tea party. Next all three of the contestants introduced ourselves and talked a little about our platforms and our successes in the MAO program. We also talked about the four points in the crown and the qualities of a true princess. We even had a runway and all of the princesses had a chance to do their very best princess "walk." The Salvation Army is first and foremost a church, so we also made it a point to the young girls that, although crowns are pretty they aren't eternal and the only eternal crown is God's and we are his princesses. We ended the princess party by decorating crown cookies with icing and sprinkles. I had a blast and I would like to thank everyone that made the party possible, the volunteers for Miss Ohio and the Salvation Army along with Melanie Murphy Miller. (Unfortunately, I have no pictures from the party because my camera was dead).

As community service day was winding down, the contestants came back for bowling. My bowling group consisted of myself, my mom, Miss Maumee Valley Shannon O'Neill and Shannon's mom. We were soooo bad! We actually won the prize for lowest overall score! I guess I'm going to need some practice for next year.

Miss Ohio Forum

I’m so sorry I haven’t posted this sooner but Blogger wasn’t letting me upload pictures for whatever reason. This past weekend was the Miss Ohio forum. The forum is a chance for all the contestants competing for the title of Miss Ohio to get to meet one another, find out what will be happening at Miss Ohio and learn what is expected of you if you win the coveted title of Miss Ohio.

The meeting was great and informative, as always. The theme for Miss Ohio is “Timeless” but not many details were given out. I do love surprises though so I am looking forward to finding out more. I do know that the contestant number will be to Rhianna’s hit, Disturbia, which is one of those songs that you just have to dance to when you hear it. We also learned the contestant line-up. I am contestant number six, which is a huge coincidence because I was contestant number six last year! We also had a chance to meet the adorable teen contestants. I wish them lots of luck and I hope they have a wonderful time this year as they compete for the title of Miss Ohio’s Outstanding Teen.

During the meeting we also found out why the contestants were staying overnight at a camp and participating in groups challenges. It is a part of the Duke of Edinburgh’ Award. To win the bronze medal you are required to be between the ages of 14 and 25, participate in an adventurous journey that lasts 2 days and 1 night, 3 months of physical recreation, skills and community service. As contestants all of us are already working out, participating in community service with our platforms and building skills (speaking skills, etc.) all we needed was a weekend with team building challenges and an overnight stay, which we did! The award is meant to learn how to give useful community service to others, encourage physical recreation and improvement of performance and encourage the development of personal interest and practice skills. This is a very prestigious award and it’s mainly been given out in Europe but the chairman of the Miss America Organization has decided to bring it over to the states. As Miss Ohio contestants it would be awesome if each of this received the award on the Miss Ohio stage. We would be the first state to do this and hopefully we would start a trend!

After the teen contestants and parents left the Miss Ohio contestants had a chance to get to one another. We were broken up into groups the corresponded with the cards we picked and the people staying in our cabins. My group consisted of Ashleigh Lemon (Miss Maple City), Becky Minger (Miss Fallen Timbers), Victoria Miller (Miss West Central), Courtney Monk (Miss Buckeye State), Karissa Martin (Miss Ohio 2008) and myself. We participated in activities that were fun, get-to-know type of activities. They actually reminded me of the kinds of challenges that the girls in Countdown to the Crown participated in. We had to build a poster that incorporated our team color and card type, do a scavenger hunt and then build a puzzle using pieces we found, trivia and name that tune (with kazoos). Our team actually won! We had the highest score out of all of the other groups. Our prize was a beautiful bracelet for each team member from Deena. Thank you!!

We wrapped up the evening with roasting smores around fire and just having the chance to get to know one another and serenade each other with kazoos.

The next day we competed in challenges. The challenges required us to have trust, communication and rely on our team. There was a human lap sit, a human knot, a rope swing, being blind folded and using our partner to help us get through an obstacle course, jump through a tire, etc. a few more that I can’t remember. After the challenges I really felt closer to the group. I really felt that this brought everyone together on a new level that’s never been reached before with the Miss Ohio contestants. I got to really know old contestants and bond with new ones. I had an amazing time. I know a lot of people didn’t understand why the contestants had to go camping….well it really was for good reason. I enjoyed myself so much and I really cannot wait to go back!

The Crowning Moment!

I had Kristen picked from the moment I saw her work the stage in swimsuit. I thought her evening gown was one of the best and she seemed to be the only contestant that didn't rush off the stage. Her answers to her on stage questions were a little shaky, however; she did have better answers than the remaining top five. Overall, I thought she was the most well-rounded contestant and I wish her the best of luck this year.

I'm pretty tired after a tiring but an extremely fun weekend. I will be posting pictures and comments tomorrow!!!

I am so excited for this weekend! It's the Miss Ohio forum and it's being held at 4-H Camp Ohio. At forum the contestants get a chance to meet one another, bond, talk about what happens during Miss Ohio week, what would happen if you won, what Miss Ohio is expected to do, etc. We also pick our contestants numbers and line-up, so wish me luck on a lucky number!

I am especially excited about forum this year because we're going to be camping. I know what you're thinking, "Pageant girls, camping in the wilderness?!" But it's not like that at all. 4-H Camp Ohio is a lovely camp ground (I would hardly call it 'roughing it') and the contestants will also be doing some high ropes courses to build trust and confidence. I am really looking forward to this because I haven't been camping in years and 4-H is my platform! I can't wait to meet the new contestants and catch up with the old. I will update my blog as soon as possible after forum and I will post pictures. As for now, I need to pack and get some sleep because I have to be up at 4 am tomorrow!

This past weekend I was crowned Miss Ohio River 2009! I am so honored and excited to have this title. I know a lot of beautiful women in the system worked hard all year and I am very blessed to have been chosen as one of the final four to go to Miss Ohio 2009.

The weekend of sweeps was a hectic one! On Saturday I went to the pageant and rehearsed everything. Although I was number 12, I had to go first in interview because I had to leave early for a dance audition to get into the Kent State dance program so I can declare dance as my minor (still no news yet on if I'm in yet, I should know in a few weeks!). I came back from a great audition only to start running around the dressing room in pre-show panic. By the time I was ready, it was show time. The great thing about sweeps is that the show goes quick and there's not much waiting and anticipating for us contestants. We went through each phase, on stage question, swimsuit, talent and evening gown and I was feeling on top of my "game." I also had some fans in the audience, my boyfriend Brett and our friends Justin and Jaclyn. When I was announced Miss Ohio River I was so relieved. I think I was more relieved than excited! I also want to congratulate Kristy Moneysmith, Miss Mohican Valley, and I look forward to being sister queens with her! I also want to congratulate Ashley Warholic, Miss Heart of Ohio and Courtney Monk, Miss Buckeye State on well deserved wins! I had the chance to meet Courtney's parents and her boyfriend and they were lovely people. And everyone knows Ashley's mom! She's also sweet, supportive and always has a huge smile on her face.

To those that didn't make it to Miss Ohio, I know this is a hard time for you because I've been there too. The very first year I competed I was only 17 and did not get to go to Miss Ohio. However, I did improve....A LOT and when I came back the following year I placed consistently and eventually won Miss Maple City and got to go to Miss Ohio. Please don't feel discouraged. Go back and look at pictures from your very first local and then look at pictures from sweeps and whether you know or not, you've improved...A LOT, and you will say "I went on stage looking like that?!" I've seen each one of improve right before my eyes. Congratulations on a great year!

4-H Proclamation Day

This past Thursday I had the pleasure of speaking to the Trumbull County Commissioners about cats, my love of 4-H and my platform, "Groomed 4 Success." The commissioners are extremely supportive of the 4-H program because they know the program is great for children and they want more young people involved in 4-H. The commissioners presented a proclamation to myself and some fellow 4-Hers saying that the week of March 12-19 is 4-H week and the promotion of this exceptional program will be done throughout Trumbull county. I want to thank the commissioners of Trumbull County for supporting 4-h not only financially but with trust that we do "Make the Best Better," which is our 4-H motto. Thank you for letting myself and my 4-H friends speak to you about the importance of 4-H and the impact it has had on our lives. We appreciate it with all our hearts!

What a weekend! I had such a great time at the Miss Muskingum Valley pageant. It was unlike any other local. We arrived Thursday night and had rehearsal until....only God knows when, but nonetheless it was fun. Interviews were Friday morning and afternoon with preliminaries to follow that night. We were divided into two flights the vintage dames and the retro gals (The theme was 'Everything Old is New Again'). I was lucky enough to win preliminary swimsuit!!!

This is great! I am so happy to see our Miss America out and about and in the spotlight. It seems like Miss America always goes unnoticed during her reign until she crowns the next girl, unless you're a crazy pageant fan, like me, and you're always looking up stuff on current titleholders and what they're up to. But to non-pageant folk, it's easy to forget about Miss America, but not Katie Stam. She is definitely making a name for herself and the organization. Plus my two favorite things are being combined tonight....America's Best Dance Crew and Miss America and I hope to one day be Miss America or on America's Best Dance Crew. Hey, what about both?!

I had such a great time tonight and I am so proud of all the ladies that competed. I had a chance to personally talk with each one before their interviews and I must admit that I was truly impressed with each one. Any one of them could have held the title Miss Maple City. I am so happy/excited for Ashleigh. Dolly and Wil are such wonderful people and I know that Ashleigh is going to have the time of her life with them. Good luck at Miss Ohio, Ashleigh! I know you will make everyone proud!

On a side note...I am so tired. I had no idea that giving up your title was such hard work!

Seventeen young women will be competing for the title of
Miss Maple City 2009.
The Miss Maple City 2009 Scholarship Program,
sponsored by The Maple City Ice Co. of Norwalk will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday
at The Ernsthausen Performing Arts Center at Norwalk High School.Doors will open
at 6 p.m. with a pre-show at 6:30 p.m. featuring Karen Opper, of Norwalk; Miss
Maple City 2007/Miss Ohio 2007 Roberta Camp and Miss Maple City 2005 Natalie
(Heileman) Clark. Camp, Clark and Miss Maple City 2008 Heather Wells will be the
emcees.Tickets are $10 each which includes a reception for Miss Maple City 2009
after the pageant.The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship, crown from
Crider Jewelers, a night's lodging Saturday at The Econo Lodge in Norwalk,
Sunday morning breakfast at Berry's Restaurant, a photo session at Moll
Photography in Norwalk, a gift certificate from Theresa-Ann's, and the right to
represent Norwalk at The Miss Ohio Scholarship Pageant in Mansfield in June.The
state winner competes for the title of Miss America.

During the evening
wear competition, each contestant is accompanied by a Miss Maple City Lil Sis.

the daughter of Norwalk residents Rhonda and Scott Pechauer.Entertainment for
the show will be provided by Wells (who also will discuss her year of service as
Miss Maple City 2008); Class Act Dance Studio of Norwalk and Clyde, Alex Fries,
of Norwalk; Faye Williams, of Grove City; Miss Ohio 2008 Outstanding Teen Sarah
Hider, of Wooster; Karen Opper, of Norwalk; and The Miss Maple City Lil Sisses.
The judges will be Miss Maple City 2002 Kelly (Carman) Morrison, of Mansfield;
Dr. Rand Laycock, of Olmsted Falls; Dave Nethers, of Fox 8 Cleveland; Patty

Alyssa Waldman, 18, is the daughter of Stephen Waldman and
Amanda Rau, of Defiance. She attends Defiance High School and will sing. Her

I must start off by saying YAY OPENING DANCE NUMBER IS BACK!!! I love seeing the opening dance number it's so cute and fun to watch and it shows the contestants having a good time. Yes, i understand that all competitors are not dancers, but I just think it's something really cute and entertaining. Secondly I loved Mario as the host. It's literally like second nature for him as a host (well, probably because he hosts just about everything that Ryan Seacrest doesn't host). I wasn't very found of leaving two-three girls behind every time they made a cut. I like when the have 15, announce 10 (5 are gone), announce top 5 (another 5 are gone). I also hate having 4 or 5 girls left when they announce the winner. I was watching the pageant with some non-pageant people and they were confused. I had to explain to them that the remaining two weren't both first runner-up, they didn't even place. I like when they're down to a final 2 and as soon as the 1st RU is announced everyone knows who won. As far as the winner goes, I thought she was the standout from the beginning. Her talent wasn't the best (my vote goes to Iowa), but she was the only girl that could walk! Also her on stage answer was one of the better answers. I am excited to see what Katie will accomplish as the new Miss America, and I look forward to seeing her on Regis and Kelly, Monday!

Kirsten Haglund was only 19 when she took the title of Miss America. Many people thought she couldn't handle the job, but she proved all of those people wrong. Not only was she beautiful but she demonstrated class and humility throughout her reign as well as being a role model to young children everywhere. Kirsten is the epitome of what a Miss America title holder should be, and I think everyone knows that the next Miss America has some big shoes to fill. Kirsten, we will miss you and America thanks you for a great year.

Tonight was the first night of preliminary competition at the Miss America pageant in Vegas. Karissa's group performed their talent. Naturally, I was rooting for our girl to win it, but the win went to Miss Delaware who looks like a total sweetheart. The swimsuit award went to "Countdown to the Crown" favorite, Miss Indiana. We will see what happens in the next following days of prelims, and I simply can't wait until Saturday when we have a brand new Miss America.

Just moments after after the clock struck 12 noon, Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the U.S. I'm sure everyone, democrats, republicans and all in between, felt a sense of overwhelming happiness.

Now Obama becoming our next president was exciting; however, as a pageant girl I noticed Michelle Obama's outfit! I loved it! Now as for her inaugural gown....um not so much. Although I did like Mrs. Biden's gown, very elegant.

On a side note I had my first day of classes for the spring semester today. Not quite as exciting as a new president, but pretty close lol. And Karissa had her interview today, my sixth sense (aka the pageant version of a spidey sense) tells me that it went well. She also will be competing in her first preliminary tonight and it seems like she is favored to win talent! GO KARISSA!

Christmas time is usually filled with hustle and bustle, but this year everything for me was a little more lax. Maybe it just seemed that way since I'm home from school after my first semester away at college. I woke up this morning excited to open my gifts while watching the Disney Christmas Parade. I made Christmas dinner, as usual, but this year I tried some new recipes which turned out great. After we enjoyed our family dinner, I served Christmas dinner to people that are homeless, less fortunate, elderly, or alone on Christmas. I had a great time and I enjoyed giving out gifts to kids of all ages. Overall, I'd say I had a great Christmas.

As the fall semester comes to end so do the activities. Being a broadcast journalism major, I wanted to get involved with extra-curricular activities that coincided with my major, which is what led me to TV-2. I tried out for the weather position earlier this fall, and it was to my pleasure to find that I got weather anchor for Mondays at 5:30! I had a blast every Monday as "Heather with the Weather!" As sad as I am to see all of the seniors leave TV-2 and to miss my Monday crew, I must say that I am looking forward to next semester! Thank you to everyone especially Eric Snitil, weather meteorologist at TV-2, who really helped me throughout the semester. I also want to thank everyone that makes TV-2 possible each and every semester.

I'm sure all you pageant folk know by now that Natasha Vivoda and Kelsey Stevens were crowned Miss Ohio USA and Ohio Teen USA 2009. The pageant was held in Portsmouth, Ohio last weekend. I know from experience in the USA system that the weekend is tiring, but goes by quickly. I was unable to compete this year because I was performing at Cleveland Cavaliers game. I wanted to congratulate Natasha and Kelsey. I know Kelsey's Aunt very well and I competed with her last year. She is a lovely young woman who will represent Ohio well. I'm also extremely proud of Natasha. I meet Natasha about 4 years ago. We both participated in the Trumbull County 4-H program and we both have held the title Miss Trumbull County Fair. Natasha is a truly amazing woman with an amazing life story. I know she will represent Ohio beautifully. Congratulations ladies, I'm so proud to call you both my friends!

Last night Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States. His 349 electoral votes crushed McCain’s 147. In John McCain’s concession speech he demonstrated class and humility. He congratulated the new president on his win and introduced Sarah Palin as a new voice in the Republican Party. President Bush said Obama's election was "especially uplifting for a generation of Americans who witnessed the struggle for civil right with their own eyes and four decades later see a dream fulfilled." Obama gave his acceptance speech with his family by his side along with running-mate Joe Biden and his family. Obama made history last night as the first african-american to be elected president. Change is happening, and I was a part of it.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of competing in the Miss Maumee Valley Scholarship program. First I must start off by thanking the Wageners for putting on a spectacular pageant. It was such an easy-going and fun day for the contestants. Secondly, I wanted to thank the Wageners' daughter, Betsy. She is always very helpful and does a great job with the contestants (did I mention her amazing singing voice, WOW). I had the opportunity to met new girls competing in the system, and bond with some of the teen contestants. I want to also congratulate Sarah Eash on winning the title of Miss Fallen Timbers Outstanding Teen. We competed together at Miss Lake Erie and had a great time talking about dance (since we both do the same style of jazz). I had a great time and I was honored to be the first runner-up to three wonderful new titleholders. Congratulations Shannon, Katie and Becky all three of you will be great at Miss Ohio. Best of luck!

Kristen Haas was recently crowned the new Miss Ohio Valley! This will be Kristen's fourth trip to Miss Ohio in June. She is a former Miss Chillicothe, Miss Maumee Valley, and Miss North Coast. Kristen was also a semi-finalist at Miss Ohio. Kristen was so helpful at Miss Ohio and other locals. Whenever anyone needs anything she is always prepared. Last year when I competed at Miss Maumee Valley I needed something to keep from slipping on the stage during my talent. I was almost in tears when Kristen approached me with rosin (a sticky substance dancers put on their shoes to keep from slipping, it's also the active ingredient in 'butt glue'). I had no problem performing after that, in fact I won talent! Thanks Kristen! She is very deserving and I wish her the best of luck at Miss Ohio 2009.

Last Thursday I was asked to speak at the annual 4-H banquet to honor the people that put forth their time, money and effort to make the 4-H program a success. I spoke on behalf of myself and all of the youth that participate in 4-H, in thanking the volunteers of the Trumbull County 4-H program. I was very excited to have this opportunity because I recently changed my platform to "Groomed 4 success- 4-H awareness." Congrats to my good friend and Miss Ohio 'roomie' Jenna Wilson on winning the title of Miss Lake Erie!

This past Saturday was the Miss Lake Erie pageant. There were six Miss contestants and three Teen contestants. The pageant took place at Lexington High School, which had just received power the night before the pageant due to the high winds earlier this week. Although there were only six contestants and only 1 crown all of the girls had fun backstage. I finally got to meet Alicia Huyghe and Monica Johnson and I also got to know three lovely and very talented teen contestants. The pageant ran smoothly (aside from the microphone going in out during intros) and we were out of the building by 10:00! I am so excited for Jenna. She previously had a rough week, but hopefully this win will turn her luck around. This will be Jenna's third trip to Miss Ohio, and I see her doing very well at the competition in June. Jenna was a great roomie and there is going to be one lucky contestant that will get Jenna as a roommate and get to experience her love of Craisens! Jenna will be crowning her successor as Miss Northeast Ohio in just a couple of weeks.

Tomorrow is the Miss Lake Erie pageant that is held in Lexington, Ohio. Last year MLE gave away two titles; Miss Lake Erie and Miss Northen Ohio. However, I am unsure if both titles will be given out tomorrow or not.

I'm excited because this will be my first local of the season! I'm not sure of who is competing yet, but I do know that Jenna Wilson, my roomie from Miss Ohio, stated that she would be competing as well on her blog. I haven't seen her since Miss Ohio, so I'm really looking forward to it.

This past Labor Day weekend I had the pleasure of participating in two parades, a chance to visit Cedar Point and Snoopy oh, and I met Robin Meade! At the parade in New London (Robin's home town) Robin was the grand marshal. Afterward I met with her, took pictures and talked about pageants of course. It was fantastic to meet her because she has accomplished all of the things I hope to accomplish. She was a former Miss Ohio and she is a very successful female news broadcaster. Tuesday, when all the students returned back to classes after the long weekend, all of my broadcast journalism friends were so jealous when I told them who I met!

Miss Maple City Appearances

These last couple of weeks I have been very busy making appearances as Miss Maple City. A few weekends ago I traveled to Norwalk for the Relay for Life. I performed and co-hosted the Miss Relay pageant, which is a competition were boys dress up like pageant contestants to see who can raise the most money. There were all kinds of "girls" competing. There was everything from J-Lo to Hannah Montana. Together all of the contestants raised over $4,000 in just 20 minutes!!!

This past weekend I was in the Wakeman Homecoming Festival parade along with Miss Ohio 2007, Roberta Camp! Before the parade the Wakeman Homecoming Queen had all fair queens and titleholders get together for a little reception to get to know one another. Everyone had a great time!

Pageant Update!

Sorry for my lack of blogging, as usual I've been unbelievably busy! So I thought I would give you a quick run down on everything happening in the pageant world.

As most of you know by now, Miss Venezuela is the new Miss Universe.

Miss Universe 2007, Riyo Mori, caused quite a stir when she wore a tuxedo to crown the new Miss Universe instead of a gown.

Also Miss USA took a stumble for a second year in a row at the Miss Universe pageant.

Trumbull County Fair Week

One of the reasons as to why I have been SO busy these past few weeks is the Trumbull County Fair. For the past 10 years I have been involved in 4-H and every year I spend a week at the fair with my 4-H project. Now, I know what you're thinking "I had no idea that Heather raised farm animals..." Well I don't, my 4-H project is my cat! I know it seems crazy, but it's true. I have been an active member of the Silver Claws Cat Club for years.

Over the years I have adapted to fast-paced beat of the fair, however this year was exceptionally challenging because I was the President of my Cat Club and the Junior Fair Board I was also the Junior Fair Queen, a member of the 4-H royal court, and Miss Trumbull County Fair. As President of Junior Fair Board I had to organize all of the 4-H and cloverbud events.

Thursday was the judging for my 4-H project. My cat was judged on her cleanliness and I was judged on my knowledge of cats, cat breeds, diseases, etc. My cat's cage was also judged based on its originality and safety. I came in 1st place in my age group. The 1st and 2nd places in each age group re-compete in a grand champion final round, and I won. After 10 years of cat club and cat shows I finally won the grand champion title!

The Junior Fair Queen competition is NOT a pageant. It is based on a private interview and leadership throughout one's club and community. On Monday evening I was crowned the Trumbull County Junior Fair Queen and this January I will go to Columbus to compete for the title of the Ohio State's Fair Queen. Once again, this is not a pageant and this competition does not go on past the state title. The state title is based on community service, leadership, private interview, and onstage question.

Monday evening I was crowned Miss Trumbull County Fair. This pageant is strictly based on poise, evening gown, on stage question, and two minute speech that each girl had to write about themselves. I was the recipient of a $1,000 savings bond. This pageant is something that I wanted to do for fun. The Trumbull County Fair is a huge attraction in my area and since I was going to be at the fair all day, every day I thought "Why shouldn't I try for Miss Trumbull County Fair, it will be fun and I can win some money for school in the fall!" This pageant does not proceed to a state or national level, therefore I am still eligible to compete in locals in the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program.

4th of July Weekend

This 4th of July I traveled to Norwalk, OH for their annual 4th of July parade. I couldn't believe how many people came out to attend the parade! All of them were very supportive of me, as their Miss Maple City. After the parade, one of the sponsors of Miss Maple City invited me to his lake house on Lake Erie to watch the Cedar Point fireworks. I had such a great time. And on July 5th I was in another parade in Willard, OH. Here are some pictures, enjoy!

I thought that once I got home from Miss Ohio I would have time to relax and unpack....that was not the case whatsoever! I've been so busy running around and working that I haven't even had the chance to unpack. I've literally been living out my suitcase! But now I finally have the chance to update my blog...

As you probably know, Karissa Martin, Miss Clayland, is the new Miss Ohio 2008! Sorry I abruptly stopped blogging during Miss Ohio week. Once prelims started we were getting back to our host homes later and later and I figured I needed to get rest rather than blog.

I couldn't believe that we had two double prelim winners, how neat!! On the third prelim night my roommate Jenna Wilson won preliminary talent. The prelim winners had a small press conference and then met with friends and family in the lobby. My chaperon and I went to the lobby to get Jenna and as she was leaving the whole room started chanting "Wilson, Wilson!" At first I thought Jenna's family was chanting as a sign of support. It wasn't until later during the car ride home did I realize that both Jenna and Kasey had the same last name, WILSON! I couldn't help but laugh at myself.

Friday and Saturday night there were a lot of extra awards given out. Unfortunately I was unable to keep track of all of them, so check out Abby's Blog for details!

I want to start off by congratulating Miss Ohio's Outstanding Teen, Sarah Hider! Today the competition started off with an opening number from High School Musical, "We're All in This Together!" Next was lifestyle and fitness followed by performances from Roberta Camp Miss Ohio 2007 and Ashley Miller Miss Ohio's Outstanding Teen 2007. Roberta and Ashley were also the Emcees for the evening. All of the contestants performed a talent, followed by evening gown and onstage question. The show was great!

Today was an easy-going day for the Miss Contestants. I had an A.M. interview that went very well, followed by a nice nap at my host home. The contestants then had lunch with parents or E.D.'s followed by the Teen Pageant that evening.

Today the contestants woke up bright and early and modeled the latest fashions from the Richland Mall. I got to sign the big red OHIO with all of the contestant's pictures and autographs. After the fashion show we brought all production costumes and shoes into the theater. We had a long rehearsal as we ran completely through Wednesday and Thursday's shows. Lunch was provided by Pizza Hut and dinner by Coney Island. Thank you to those that donated food, it was delicious!

Tomorrow (Sunday) the contestants will have a private brunch at Applebee's. After our brunch we will meet at Key Bank to sign autographs and meet with girl scouts. The parade pulls out at 2:00 (keep those fingers crossed for a nice day)! After the parade we will enjoy dinner at the Elks followed by a nice long practice....

Sorry for the lack of blogging folks, with all the packing and rhinestoning I had to do there was just no time for a new post. Also, sorry for any typos (it's hard to type in nails ok!). Well...where to start...

The contestants arrived yesterday for fitings at the Richland Mall, followed by dinner at the Carousel with sponsors. After dinner was rehearsal at which we learned our patterns for swimsuit and evening gown. We also learned that we will be walking down very narrow steps for swimsuit competition....hopefully I won't fall on my face! We also learned that contestant number 1, Samantha Eggers, has dropped out of the competition and contestant Emily Cousino was in the hospital with fever.

Today the contestants had a very long and productive rehearsal. We learned our opening numbers, The Bend and Snap, the Ciara Hip-Hop, and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. We also learned Viva Las Vegas and Chorus Line. WOW! We were told that Emily is feeling better and will possibly join the rest of the contestants tomorrow (Saturday)!! Luckily, Emily is rooming with dancer Katie Camp who can fill her in on all of the dances and opening numbers! Please keep Emily in your thoughts and prayers that her fever will not return, she has worked very hard to get to Miss Ohio.

Tomorrow on Saturday the contestants will be arriving at the Richland Mall around 10:00am for the fashion show. The fashion show will be "red carpet" themed. After the fashion show we will have rehearsals all night until ??? Keep your fingers crossed for NO RAIN on Sunday (the day of the parade)! Stay tuned for pictures and more updates during Miss Ohio week.

I will be talking about the Miss America Scholarship program, the Miss Ohio pageant, my platform (Hey kids, don't sit get fit!), and what I've been doing to get ready as Miss Maple City. I have been an official WFMJ Today model for the last 4 years, appearing in many fashion segments and even before a few weddings. This will be my first appearance as a guest on the show. I am looking forward to discussing the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program & promoting my platform on the show.

I'm Finally Home

I'm sorry I didn't blog sooner, but as usual I have been busy! This past weekend I was a judge at the CFL (Catholic Forensic League) National Tournament. I had such a great time judging and the competition was fierce!

We left late Thursday night and drove to Wisconsin, which was a 12 hour ride. We got there around noon the next day and checked in. We had lots of free time so the team had time to go to the mall for a little recreation. The next day was the begining of preliminary competition. I was a judge for the event of Dramatic Performance. I judged some of the most talented people in the nation. After a day of competition, the numbers were posted of those who had made the next cut. Four students from Howland made the first cut, which is extremely difficult to do. The next day of competition was even more extreme. As the day went on fewer and fewer competitors from our group were still competing. Finally the final round was posted and a young lady from Howland had made it to the final round in the event of Declaration. Also, a senior from Niles High School had made the final round in the event of Dramatic Performance. Freshman Niki Dhami from Howland placed 6th in the nation and senior Ron Aulet from Niles placed 4th in the nation. Congratulations! Here are a couple of pictures from the weekend.

Today I'm blogging from Wisconsin! This past school year I was judge for Howland High School and their speech and debate team. I would judge tournaments every Saturday, most of the events that I judge are speaking and interp events such as dramatic interp or original oratory. I was very involved in forensics at Howland High School and I love being a judge. The Catholic National tournament starts tomorrow morning and I will post pictures.

My Bowling Team!

I know this post is a few days late, but I have been so busy! This past weekend was the annual Miss Ohio Community Service Weekend. I had such a great time and I really got to know some of the contestants I didn't know very well. The contestants arrived at Terri's house on Friday night, (I got lost and was about 20 minutes late!). Unfortunately, Miss Brookville Amanda Pitcock has resigned her title and withdrew from competing at Miss Ohio. But we did learn that the new Miss Ohio will be receiving a new convertible and a condo at Primrose in Mansfield during her reign. WOW! We also played a cute game that Roberta made up. We partnered up with a contestant we didn't know and had to tell them two truthful facts and one lie, and everyone had to guess which statement was the lie. I was partnered with Erica Gelhaus and we had a great time, although neither of us were very successful at this game. Krystle Formosa ended up having the best lie and won an IHOP gift card, go Krystle!

Next, I found out that my roommate during Miss Ohio week will be Jenna Wilson, Miss Northeast Ohio. I was excited to learn I was rooming with Jenna because she is so genuine and we had a lot of fun together when we competed at Miss Northeast Ohio in October. Amy Allen, Andrea Andrycik, Jenna Wilson, and I watched the last few exciting minutes of the Cavs game and ate Craisens before going to sleep that night, good times! The next morning all of the contestants met at the United Way Building before leaving for their assignments. I had the pleasure of playing with kids at the Friendly House along with Kasey Wilson, Shannon O'Neill, and Katy Wolford. I was so happy that I had the opportunity to meet with all of these kids because it went hand in hand with my platform. The kids were treated to a "fun day" because of good grades and behavior. The fun day consisted of basketball, hoola-hoop, games, swimming, and autographed pictures from Kasey Wilson and Roberta Camp. I was so happy to see tons of grade school children active and having a good time. When it came time for all of the kids to hop in the pool Kasey, Katy, Shannon and I disappointed many of the children because we weren't able to swim. Since we couldn't swim we sat and watched as the kids showed off their best cannon ball.

After we left the Friendly House, we headed to Park Lanes for the Bowl-a-thon. I'm not the best bowler, but I put forth an effort. My score was pretty low, so I'm not going to embarrass myself by telling you my score. Although most of girls had low scores, I must say that I was very impressed with Roberta! Not only is she gorgeous, well-spoken, talented.....she can BOWL! Our Miss Ohio never stops impressing me!

A rainy day at Cedar Point

Yesterday a few of my friends and I went to Cedar Point. Despite the rainy, cold weather we had a great time. When we got to the park it seemed that the weather wasn't going to be too bad. However, it was a little overcast. Sure enough the rain came. It would sprinkle off and on throughout the day, but nothing too terrible. Although the rain wasn't great, the short lines were! Being that it was a cold, rainy day and a Wednesday, there were very few people at Cedar Point. The longest wait was about 15 minutes!

I am not much of a "thrill rider." I hardly ever ride anything, let alone roller coasters, so for most of the day I was the designated bag holder. My friends were begging and pleading that I ride something. So we came upon the Maverick, the newest roller coaster at Cedar Point. It didn't look too high or too fast so I thought "sure I can ride this." Little did I know that this roller coaster is one of Cedar Point's most thrilling rides. When we got off the ride I gave my boyfriend a glaring look. He said "Wow, I'm so sorry, I had no idea. I thought it was going to be a lame, baby ride." I wasn't mad of course, my legs just felt like jello. By the end of the night I had ridden the Maverick about 4 or 5 times, in the pouring rain. Hopefully I won't be sick for Miss Ohio Community Service Weekend!

I Dare You!

This year I was chosen by the 4-H Senior Fair Board to receive the "I dare you" award. The award is given to two people in recognition of their personal achievement, balanced living, and service to others. The award is given in memory of William H. Danforth. Along with the award I received the book I Dare You written by William H. Danforth, himself. I am very honored to have been chosen to receive this award.

This past Saturday I attended my third prom! Although I graduated last year, my boyfriend, Brett, has not yet graduated. Of course he took me as his date to this year's prom. It was so nice to see all of my old high school friends and teachers. The night seemed to go so fast. It seemed like it ended before it even started! We started out taking pictures at his house with his parents and little cousin, Dolton. After what seemed like hours of taking pictures we finally left for prom. However, on the way there I made Brett stop to get Starbucks! We arrived just on time and everyone was walking in and looking good. After prom we went out to Cafe Capri and it was delicious. I had so much fun I'll never forget it, but now I guess that I'm really done with prom...bummer.

Frisky Wells 1996-2007

A year ago today our Frisky was put down. We had Frisky for 10 years and we rescued her when she was about a year old. Frisky had developed a brain tumor and she was acting strange by starting cat fights with our other two cats. She would growl and scream in the middle of night looking out the window at nothing. It got to be too much and we only had two options. We could either seperate Frisky and keep her in the basement 24/7 or get her euthanized. We figured that living in the basement all the time was no kind of life for our Frisky, so we did the most humane thing, we just put her down. Frisky we love you and you are greatly missed.

Even though I have grown up in Ohio all of my life, I am a Yankees fan. Please, don't hate me! Today a few of my friends and my boyfriend, Brett, went to Progressive Field to watch the Yankees and the Indians game. The game started off slow, but as the night went on it got more interesting. The score ended up 1 to 0, in favor of the Yankees.

My mom joked with me about the Yankees losing to the Indians in the previous games this week. I told her not to worry, and that the Yankees would win once I was there. Turned out that my predictions were correct! Although I'm happy that my Yankees won, I always say "If a team is going to beat the Yankees, it better be the Indians since they're from Cleveland."

Healthy Lifestyles for Kids!

This past weekend I was asked to speak at an event promoting healthy lifestyles in today's youth. Being that my platform is "Hey Kids, Don't sit. Get fit!" I was excited to have such a great opportunity. Not only do I want kids to be more active, but I also want to change bad eating habits in children. I recently bought the cookbook Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld (yes, Jerry Seinfeld's wife), so I decided that I would make blueberry oatmeal bars as a sample of healthy food. I was nervous if the kids would actually like the dish because there was spinach pureed into the blueberries! Turns out, the kids loved it, and so did all of the adults!

Sadly, I will be unable to watch the pageant tonight because I will be working from 8 to close. However, I wanted to remind everyone to tune into NBC tonight at 9:00. I'll be cheering for Miss Ohio USA, Monica Day Boggs!

On April 4th, the first sweeps pageant was held in Chillicothe, and three girls were crowned! Congratulations to:

Chelsie is such a sweet girl! She was literally right next to me throughout the entire pageant weekend, because she was the contestant right after me! Our hotel rooms were even right next to each other. She was so much fun to hang out with all weekend. I wish her a lot of luck at the national pageant, Miss Teen USA, in August. I know she is going to do fantastic! I hope she comes home with a new crown. Go Chelsie!

Congratulations Sophia Davis, the new Miss Hamilton!

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend Miss Hamilton this past weekend, but I wanted to congratulate Sophia on her win and 3rd trip to Miss Ohio. I competed with Sophia at Miss Lake Erie and she was one of the sweetest girls I've ever met. I can't wait for Miss Ohio! I get more and more excited every day. Congrats Sophia!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated worldwide by Irish people, and by many of non-Irish descent. Even if you're not Irish, "Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day." So dig out your green outfits and four leaf clovers and enjoy some Irish cuisine. This holiday is usually celebrated in Ireland and the United States.

I've grown up, always enjoying St. Patrick's Day. My family used to go out every year to McMenamy's, a local Irish restaurant, for dinner every year. However, this year I think I will just be relaxing and studying for a math midterm on Wednesday. My Dad is 100% Irish, (and if you can't figure it out, that would make me 50% Irish), so go ahead, "Kiss Me I'm Irish!"

The Chicago River is dyed green in celebration of St. Patrick's Day every year. The dye is actually an orange color, but when mixed with the natural color of the river it becomes green.

4-H Proclamation Day

On March 6th the Trumbull County Commissioners invited a few 4-H members to speak at a meeting about 4-H. We spoke about what 4-H really is and how it has affected our lives and made us better people. Every year the Trumbull County Commissioners have 4-H proclamation week. The point of proclamation week is let everyone in Trumbull County know what a great program 4-H really is.

I've been involved with 4-H for 10 years, and this is my last year to participate. I'm the president of the Silver Claws Cat Club and I'm the president of Junior Fair Board. When deciding my platform for MAO, I had a difficult time deciding if it should be 4-H awareness or Childhood obesity. Ultimately I chose childhood obesity, because I thought it was more of a pressing issue and an epidemic.
